Galaxy Research warns of sustainability issues for Bitcoin layer-2 rollups

Optimizing Data Compression:
There are currently two main approaches to data compression in Bitcoin rollups: ZK-SNARKs and optimistic rollups. ZK-SNARKs are a form of zero-knowledge proof that allows for the verification of a large amount of data without revealing any of the underlying information. This can greatly reduce the amount of data that needs to be stored on the blockchain, making it more scalable. On the other hand, optimistic rollups rely on fraud proofs to ensure the validity of transactions, allowing for a smaller amount of data to be stored on the blockchain while still maintaining security and trustlessness.
Scalability Solutions:
In addition to data compression techniques, there are also ongoing efforts to improve the overall scalability of Bitcoin rollups. One such solution is the implementation of sidechains, which are separate blockchains that can process transactions off the main chain. This allows for increased transaction throughput without overburdening the main blockchain. Another solution is the use of sharding, which involves splitting the blockchain into smaller parts that can process transactions in parallel, further increasing scalability.
